Where the Mountain Ends and the Whales Begin: Kaikōura, New Zealand
Off the Kaikōura coast, a sperm whale surfaces less than a kilometre from shore. Behind it, the Southern Alps rise into cloud. The canyon beneath it drops 1,000 metres. This is what makes Kaikōura different: not the wildlife alone, but the geology that explains it.
